The Luckaitztal forest restructuring project aims to transform a uniform pine forest in Brandenburg into a climate-resilient mixed-woodland. By transforming the forest, the project expects to remove over 23,000 tons of CO₂e emissions over 30 years and to secure and improve the habitat for species.

Local Forest Restructuring in Brandenburg

Since 2018, 500k hectares of forest have been lost in Germany and more than 60% of the biomass in the European Union is at climate risk because of the consequences of global warming. To reduce the risk of forest loss due to wildfires, droughts, floodings, and pest infestations, around 3M hectares of forest in Germany have to be restructured from monocultures to mixed-woodland.

The Luckaitztal climate project which covers approximately 640ha of forest in Brandenburg aims to transform the current coniferous forest, which is made up of 94% pine trees and has relatively uniform tree heights, into a more climate-resilient and productive forest in Brandenburg. Due to its uniformity, the forest is currently vulnerable to climate-related disasters such as storms, heat stress, and beetle infestations.

To make the forest more resilient against the consequences of climate change, the following measures will be taken in the coming years:

(1) single-tree harvesting to stimulate rejuvenation,
(2) planting diverse, climate-resilient tree species such as Douglas fir, birch, or oak,
(3) regular hunting to prevent serious forest damage.

By implementing these measures, the Luckaitztal climate project will reduce carbon emissions by decreasing the climate risk of the forest and increasing its structural diversity. This will remove additional carbon emissions from the atmosphere and store it in the trees' biomass while securing and improving the habitats for many animal and plant species. Over the 30 years project cycle, the project activities are going to reduce and remove more than 23,000 tons of CO₂e emissions vis-à-vis the baseline scenario in the absence of the project activity.
