Siemens had defined ambitious sustainability targets that also applied to business travel. However, travel managers did not have the tools to systematically apply Siemens’ sustainability policy at the point of booking, and CO costs were not allocated to a shared, transparent budget. As a result, Siemens’ climate objectives were not consistently reflected in booking decisions.
"Siemens has ambitious climate targets and builds on strong partnerships to achieve them. SQUAKE has demonstrated strong solutions and expertise to support our journey to reduce emissions."

Siemens
To close this gap, Siemens decided to embed sustainability into every business trip. The objective was twofold: provide travellers with clear visibility into the CO₂ impact of each travel option and, where emissions are unavoidable, apply a carbon fee directly to the trip cost and charge it to the traveller’s corporate credit card.
Rethinking the role of every business trip
Together with SQUAKE, Siemens has introduced a seamless plug-in for SAP Concur that brings sustainability directly into the travel booking process. It displays the CO₂ emissions for each trip and automatically adds a carbon contribution to support Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) purchases – linking every journey to tangible climate impact.
Embedding climate costs in the booking and invoicing flow
SQUAKE provided the technological backbone to make this vision a reality. CO₂ emissions are calculated and displayed consistently across booking flows, using Siemens’ selected methodology. Mid- and back-office systems were synchronized with exact emissions data, while a carbon price of 120 CHF per ton was transparently added to displays and invoices. This turned climate costs into a tangible, enforceable element of travel.
From policy to measurable impact
The transformation delivered results beyond expectations. Siemens reduced travel-related CO₂ emissions and directed a significant investment into SAF. With a source-based allocation model, SAF costs are now transparently charged to individual travelers’ corporate credit cards — making accountability real, and impact measurable.
